At Spacelab we’ve always been driven by the purpose that, as a collective, we can help make the world a better place - both through the work we do and here within the lab_. And whilst this belief has always been at the heart of what we do, we know that there are always changes we can make, however big or small, to push this further. So ever since we set out 17 years ago we’ve been working hard to change up some of our procedures and processes to help us towards this goal.
This belief is why we’ve decided to undertake the journey to become a certified B Corp and join a collective of organisations who all share the same unified goal - to facilitate a global movement of businesses making a real difference in the world.
“Society’s most challenging problems cannot be solved by government and nonprofits alone. By harnessing the power of business, B Corps use profits and growth as a means to a greater end: positive impact for their employees, communities, and the environment.” - B Corp
The initial assessment, which looks at various factors through which we can make a more positive impact on the world, including our culture and team, the environment, our local and wider community, and the work we do for our clients, has helped us to identify certain areas and aspects which we can improve on. For example, we’ve switched to an entirely renewable energy provider in our first step to becoming a carbon neutral office. We’ve created a sustainable supplier database aimed at reducing the environmental impact of our projects, where each product gets given a sustainability score based on certain criteria. We’re also starting to look at our suppliers and clients values and purpose to ensure that they align with our core belief that we all, as a collective, have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the world.
We’re excited to have started this journey to becoming a B Corp, and we’re not too far off from becoming certified and joining the B Corp community to help us be an even better business. If you’re interested in joining us on this journey and becoming a B Corp yourself, or just want to find out more about what it involves, then check out their website here.
