We asked Jayanie a few questions to help you all get to know her a bit better.

Tell us a little bit about you, your background and your role at spacelab_? I was born in Sri Lanka, a tiny island that feels quite far away from where I am today. My journey has taken me through a few different places — I first started working in Singapore, then returned to Sri Lanka for a while before eventually making my way to the UK. I think moving between different countries and cultures has shaped me quite a lot. It’s made me adaptable, open-minded and always curious about new people and experiences. I’m now a Senior Technical Designer at spacelab, where I get to combine the creative and technical sides of what I do. I enjoy figuring out how ideas can become a reality. It’s been a great place to keep learning and growing, while doing work that I genuinely enjoy.

What inspires you? I think I’m most inspired by people and the different experiences life brings. Having grown up in Sri Lanka, started my career in Singapore and then moved to the UK, I’ve had the chance to experience quite different cultures and ways of life. Every place and every person I’ve met has taught me something.

What do you like most about working at spacelab_? I’ve only been at spacelab for three months, so I’m still getting to know the people, the culture and the way things work. But what I’ve enjoyed most so far is how welcoming and collaborative everyone has been.

What made you want to join the spacelab? I was attracted to spacelab because it felt like a place where I could bring my experience while continuing to learn and grow. I liked the combination of creative thinking, technical challenges and collaboration, and the opportunity to work alongside people with different skills and perspectives. After working in different countries and experiencing different ways of working, I was looking for a new challenge and a place where I could keep developing. spacelab felt like a great fit, and three months in, I’m really enjoying the journey so far.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be? I think I’d make people a little more understanding of each other. Having lived in different countries, I’ve seen how differently people can think, communicate and approach life — and I’ve come to appreciate how much we can learn from those differences. I think the world would be a better place if we were a little more curious about each other, listened more and were less quick to judge. Sometimes understanding someone starts simply with taking the time to see things from their perspective.
