Homerton Baptist Church have built a strong and growing community in the London Borough of Hackney, where it has been present for over 200 years. Their 1960s building had become unfit for purpose and no longer able to accommodate for the growth of the church.
We worked closely with the pastor to create a community and church space on the ground and lower ground floors to fit the needs of this growing community. Above are 24 residential apartments – one belonging to the church. The other 23 will be sold to fund the scheme, making it self-sustainable. For residents, there is a welcoming communal terrace on the first floor to relax and socialise. Private balconies provide additional outside space.
The design takes advantage of its corner-site location and creates a striking, contemporary addition to the streetscape. The cantilevered, stepped facades, with inset balconies, create architectural interest while also tapering the form in consideration of the adjacent buildings.
